Snow Buntings

Snow buntings are winter birds that arrive here in Newfoundland late in the fall. and leave again early spring. I have lots of memories of sitting in my grandmother’s old rocking chair which was placed in front of our big picture window overlooking the harbour, watching as they rise as one, drifting, tumbling, and swirling in a flurry like a blizzard to and fro across the sky. It was always fascinating watching these tiny birds that remind me of toasted marshmallows hopping about foraging for food in the snow.  On a visit home one fall I spotted a flock that had made it’s way to my brother’s yard and were feeding from the bird feeder on his bridge. They were so beautiful I snapped a few photos and just had to paint them . The original is 16×20 acrylic.
